STOP THE JAIL TAX INCREASE
Prop. 497 would double the Jail District sales tax
The proposal would increase the existing Jail District excise (sales) tax from ¼ cent to ½ cent per dollar on taxable purchases. If approved, the increase would begin July 1, 2027, and continue for 20 years.
YOU PAY MORE. YOU KEEP LESS.
A higher sales tax means more money goes to the tax on each taxable purchase. Over time, repeated purchases can mean less money available in a household budget for other expenses, depending on what is purchased and the amount spent.
- Higher costs on taxable purchases
- Less money available for other household expenses
- Less purchasing power for people with limited or fixed budgets
- The additional tax would continue for 20 years
It isn’t just one purchase. The additional tax would be collected repeatedly on taxable purchases over the 20-year period.
