Prescott Home Repair Program Offers Grants of Up to $5,000

Prescott homeowners who meet income requirements can apply for grant assistance for certain repairs through the Prescott Minor Home Repair Program. The pilot is intended to support affordable, decent and safe housing in the city, with grants of up to $5,000 per home.

The program is funded through the City of Prescott’s federal Community Development Block Grant allocation. The Prescott Chamber of Commerce Foundation administers it, with continuing oversight from City Community Development Department staff. Funding levels vary annually, and the pilot initially has limited funds. The city may add funding or broaden eligible work if the program is successful.

### Who may apply

The program is for income-eligible owners of single-family homes located in Prescott. Applicants must live in the city and must have owned the home for at least 12 months before applying. The home must be the owner’s primary residence; vacation rentals and other properties that are not the owner’s primary home are excluded.

The program information provided does not state a specific income limit. Applicants should consult the program materials or contact the Chamber for details about eligibility and the application process.

### Repairs covered—and excluded

Eligible work in the pilot is limited to accessibility improvements, life-safety repairs and repairs addressing code violations. Examples listed by the program include electrical hazards; lead paint, mold or asbestos abatement; and heating, plumbing or cooling repairs.

Accessibility work may include grab bars, hand railings, accessible toilets, steps, sidewalks and ramps. Fire-prevention measures such as sprinklers and smoke detectors, as well as carbon monoxide detectors, are also among the listed eligible repairs.

The grant does not cover new roofs, internal remodels or expansions. Aesthetic work such as painting is not eligible unless it is part of a lead-paint or mold-abatement project. Repairs to a vacation rental or another property that is not the owner’s primary home are also excluded.

### Documents to prepare

Applications must include all required supporting records to be considered. The checklist calls for proof of identity, citizenship and Prescott residency, with examples including a state ID, passport, Social Security card or utility bill. Applicants must also provide proof of income, such as a tax return, employer letter, pay stubs or documentation of Social Security, disability, retirement or child-support income.

Other required items are proof of homeowners insurance; bank statements for the previous two months; an asset certification form; the latest mortgage statement, if applicable; a Yavapai County tax-status statement; and a copy of the home deed. The program also requires a signed affidavit about receipt of other funds. The Chamber provides that affidavit if an application for assistance is approved.

The Chamber’s program page lists a handbook, application, policies and procedures, and asset certification form. Applicants can contact the Prescott Chamber of Commerce at 117 W. Goodwin Street, Prescott, AZ 86303, or call 928-445-2000 to ask about the materials and submission process. The program information does not specify an application deadline. The City Community Development Department may change or amend program rules to support administration and meet federal HUD requirements.
