Prescott College Outlines Career, Internship and Veteran Resources

Prescott College provides students with career planning and internship services intended to connect academic work with professional experience. Available support ranges from help preparing application materials to finding internships, employment opportunities and mentors.

The college’s career resources are available to students seeking their first job as well as those preparing for a change in profession. Assistance is tailored to a student’s experience, degree plan and career goals.

Career preparation services

Students can receive guidance on resumes and cover letters, along with support in developing education and work portfolios. The college also provides career advice, personalized references and information about job openings.

Professional networking is another part of the program. Prescott College points to the relationships between students and faculty members as a way for students to learn about employment and graduate fellowship opportunities. Some of those openings may not appear on widely used job-search websites.

Faculty and instructors can also help students better understand the expectations and professional practices within their fields. This connection gives students a way to draw on faculty members’ experience while considering employment, graduate education or other professional steps.

Alumni mentorship

Prescott College graduates also participate in career mentorship. Alumni volunteers assist current students as they consider career options, build professional connections and prepare for life after college.

The alumni program supplements guidance from faculty and staff. Depending on a student’s needs, mentorship may involve discussing career pathways, sharing professional experience or helping the student expand a network of contacts.

Internships and academic credit

Internships allow students to use classroom learning in a professional setting. Prescott College students may complete internships during the academic year or over the summer.

Some placements come through the college’s network, while students may also identify opportunities independently. In either case, faculty advisers can help establish a learning plan that fits the student’s degree requirements. An eligible internship can then provide academic credit toward the degree.

Arizona Serve is one of the college’s principal sources of internship opportunities. The program administers federal AmeriCorps grants and places participants with local nonprofit organizations and public-sector institutions.

Service areas may include education, equine therapy and work addressing homelessness. Participants perform national service while working in the local community and can earn college credit through a Civic Leadership practicum.

Resources for veterans

The college’s Veterans Resource Center serves student veterans and members of military families. Its services include peer support and opportunities for continued participation in the college community.

The center also functions as a central point for locating resources available through the college community and at the state and national levels. Questions about veteran services can be directed to 928-350-1108 or the Veterans Resource Center email listed by Prescott College.

How to ask about career services

Students with questions about career advising and internships may contact Merrie D. Heath, director of career advising and internships, at 928-350-2002 or through the career services email provided by the college.

The full set of services covers practical application materials, career guidance, mentorship, networking, job information and internships. Students considering an internship for credit should work with a faculty adviser to ensure the experience is structured in accordance with their degree plan.
