Residents looking for internet service, digital reading materials or technology-based learning tools can find several options at the Chino Valley Public Library. Some services require an active library card, while public Wi-Fi, guest computer access and children’s educational computers are available without one.
The library is at 1020 Palomino Road in Chino Valley. Its technology resources include devices that can be taken home, online publications, audiobooks, research databases, printing equipment and materials designed for children.
### Internet access at home and at the library
Library cardholders can check out mobile internet hotspot devices. The hotspots provide Wi-Fi that can be used at home, giving patrons a portable option for connecting to the internet.
A card is not required to use Wi-Fi in and around the library building during regular business hours. The network does not require a password.
The library also has internet-connected computers that visitors can use with a free guest pass. Black-and-white and color printing are available, along with a black-and-white copier. Black-and-white pages cost 10 cents each, while color pages cost 50 cents each.
### Digital books, magazines and news
An active library card provides access to e-books, electronic magazines and digital audiobooks for readers of different ages. These materials are offered through the OverDrive website and the Libby app.
Cardholders can also receive online access to The New York Times. Additional research and educational resources are listed through the online classes and research sections of the library’s website. The available databases include Ancestry.
The library also lists free movie rentals for cardholders and hosts movie events.
### Audiobooks that do not require downloads
For patrons who want an alternative to streaming or downloading an audiobook, the library offers Playaway devices for multiple age groups. These self-contained audiobooks do not need Wi-Fi, a CD player or a separate download. Users can listen with headphones or connect the device to a vehicle stereo with a cable.
Wonderbooks provide another audio option for children. Each Wonderbook combines a printed book with built-in narration and includes discussion questions at the end. This format allows a child to follow the physical pages while hearing the story read aloud.
### Virtual reality and children’s computers
Children can also use virtual reality book kits. Each kit contains cardboard virtual reality goggles and a nonfiction reader organized by reading level. A smartphone is required to scan a QR code, download the associated app and display the material through the goggles.
Inside the library, educational game computers are available for children across a range of ages. These stations do not connect to the internet. Children can choose from the installed games and begin playing, and no library card is needed to use them.
