Prescott-Area Property Owners Can Check Fire District Coverage

A home’s proximity to a fire station does not, by itself, confirm that the property is covered by a fire district. Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority says fire and emergency medical services are not automatically extended to properties outside established fire district or area fire department boundaries.

That distinction may matter to people in the Prescott area and elsewhere in Yavapai County who are unsure which district, if any, serves their property. CAFMA’s notice, posted May 8, 2023, says some properties are outside district boundaries even when they are near a station.

### How to check a property

Yavapai County’s online map tool lets users look up whether an address is within a fire district and, if so, which district. To check, open the county’s map tool at https://gis.yavapaiaz.gov/v4/, select the “Search” tab and enter the property address. Then select the “Special Districts” tab to view the district information.

The map is a way to check coverage, but residents who want to verify whether a property is within a CAFMA district can also contact the authority directly. CAFMA lists its office number as 928-772-7711 for coverage questions.

### Options for properties outside a district

CAFMA says people who do not have fire and medical services through a fire department or district may be eligible to pursue one of two options: annexation into one of its districts or a Fire Protection Agreement, also called an FPA.

Eligibility and the appropriate option depend on the property and its circumstances; the notice does not say that either option is available to every property outside a district. CAFMA directs people seeking details about annexation or an FPA to call its office. The same number can be used to ask whether a property is within a CAFMA fire district.

For residents checking an address, the practical first step is to use the county map’s search and Special Districts tabs. If the result is unclear, or if the property appears to be outside a district, contacting CAFMA can help clarify the property’s status and explain whether an annexation or agreement inquiry may be relevant.

The authority’s notice emphasizes that location near a station should not be treated as confirmation of district coverage. Checking the address through the county tool, then verifying details with CAFMA when needed, can help residents understand whether their property is within a district or whether they should ask about other arrangements.
